We live in a very complex and ever changing society. We have many expectations that are placed on us everyday. Some of the pressure we feel we place on ourselves through goals and dreams and others are placed on us by employers and those we live with. Most people can handle the stress on any given day, but others cease to function if they feel too overwhelmed. Everyone needs to accept that there are times in our lives that we may need to reach out to others for help, and that this is an act of courage and strength, not weakness.
Many people benefit from mental health services. Unfortunately there is still a stigma attached to receiving help for emotional support. Needing to discuss and understand our feelings is related to weakness, instead of self-growth. There is nothing weak about obtaining mental health services. Mental health professionals, who come with varying degrees, are available to anyone. Some people are inflicted with severe and persistent mental illness which requires on-going medication monitoring as well as frequent counseling sessions. Other people may find that a life situation or incident leaves them incapable of moving forward. They may find relieve through short term counseling as well as medication to deal with short term anxiety or sleep issues.
Many people have the impression that once you begin receiving mental health services you need to be involved with them for the rest of your life. This is not true. I compare mental health services to legal services. Some large corporations or complicated industries need to have legal advice all the time. They may even employ an attorney. Other companies or individuals may find they need legal advice to deal with a one time criminal charge, and others may need an attorney to develop the will for their estate. Just as these are varying degrees of legal aid, so are there varying degrees of mental health services. Just as we do not expect people to know and handle their own legal issues, we should not expect people to handle their own emotional issues as they arise.
Most mental health services are covered through standard insurance plans. Terms may confuse people regarding who they should see. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor that has a specialty in psychology. They can test and diagnosis people and prescribe medications for their patients. A psychologist has an advanced degree and can test and interpret testing to give people a diagnosis, however they cannot prescribe medications. A therapist and counselors can provide one on one and group talk therapy, however they cannot administer testing or prescribe medications.
