Accepting personal responsibility for what we do and say is very important in keeping ourselves centered and being a great person. However, you do not need to accept any personal responsibility for things that were done to you or said to you as a child. The adults who did those things to you need to accept their responsibility for their actions and the pain, both mental and physical, they caused you to have for most of your life.

Eating is one of the most common activities we take. But tell me how often we really notice the food we are eating or how it was different from the one we ate last time. So your first exercise is Mindfulness Eating. When you sit down to eat, stop every thing else. Switch off your cell phone, TV and radio. Put the newspaper aside or any book you were reading. Now get down to the business of eating.
Just look at the food and try to imagine how it was grown and prepared. Feel the toil of the farmer as he ploughed his field. Feel the warmth of the sun on the plant. Imagine how the roots reached out to suck the life giving water. The harvest time and its journey to your table. How it looked on the plant and how it looks on your table?
Appreciate the work which has gone into the entire process. Observe the texture of the food. Try to list the condiments and seasonings which have been used. Did the cook use a little more nutmeg than was necessary? Chew your food deliberately and you will be amazed to notice the things which you never had earlier.
Try to notice how your food smells. Your olfactory memory can connect you to distant events in your past in a flash. Does it remind you of your mother’s cooking? The smell of food may remind you of the time when you sat in the breakfast nook in winters and did your homework under the light of the big brass lamp. The thoughts which the food evokes in you are not important. What is important is that you are taking notice of the food which you are eating and connecting to a distant event through this experience.
Once you eat a complete meal in this fashion, you will realize how much satisfaction you have deprived yourself over the years. Eating mindfully is only one of the exercises which you can undertake as an experiment. But I am certain that very soon you will be willingly adopting the mindful eating as a norm rather than an exception.
Try to apply this experience in other spheres of life. Multi tasking has become the bane of our times. We are always trying to do more than one thing at a time. We do not realize the damage we are doing to our nervous system by paying attention to so many things at a time. Start doing mindfulness exercises for various activities in your daily life and see the difference for yourself.
Breathing is the first and the last function a human being performs after arriving in this world. But sadly not many of us do it correctly. Time and again studies have demonstrated that most of us do not utilize almost half of our lungs. Resultantly, our brain and muscles do not get the required amount of oxygen. The lack of oxygen seriously affects our performance; both at the physical as well as the mental level.
Over eons, man has learned to live by on reduced oxygen intake. We have gradually adapted ourselves to breathe in a shallow manner, filling only the upper half of our lungs. We barely get by with this shallow breathing technique, but are never aware of the damage we are doing to out physiology.
Mindfulness meditation is a great way to rectify the situation. The core principle of meditation is to live in the present moment. Since we are excluding everything which is linked to our past or the future, we are focused only on that tiny second that we are breathing. The breath we take has to be a deep breath which goes right down to our abdomen.
In medical terms it is known as diaphragmatic breathing. You inhale through your nose and let your abdomen expand downwards. This is in direct contrast to your normal breathing pattern where your chest expands with every breath. Let your lower ribs expand outwards instead. Your chest should move a little only and that too at the tail end of your breath. Hold your breath for a few seconds to let the oxygen get absorbed in the system, and the exhale.
If you remember about the first lesson for mindfulness meditation, you will recall that breathing holds a very important place in this activity. The posture which you adopt for mindfulness meditation is near ideal for proper breathing. You are sitting straight. Your head and neck are in straight line with you spine. Your shoulders are pushed down in a relaxed position.
Sitting in this position, as you push away the thoughts of the past and the future, take a deep breath which should appear to be coursing through your body. As a matter of fact it will be doing so only up to your lower abdomen. With just a little practice, you should be able to master your breathing. With the new breathing technique, you will become aware of your body in a completely different light.
Since most of your life you have been breathing wrongly, the chances are that you will revert to your earlier style of breathing every now and then. To prevent this situation, you have to keep reminding yourself at regular intervals. The best time is of course when you are in for the mindfulness meditation itself. However, you can easily do it without any inconvenience during your lunch break or the stretch intervals at work.
By the way if you have not yet learned to take a stretch break during your work, you are heavily losing on the efficiency graph. Take a stretch break every hour or so, especially if you are working on a console. Stretch yourself and take a few real deep breaths to reinvigorate your system.
